Threads makes its European Union debut, here’s how Meta is doing it differently there


Meta‘s social media platform, Threads, has made its debut in the European Union, announced CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In a post on Threads, Zuckerberg shared the news that the service is now accessible in more European countries.
Threads initially launched in the US, UK, and over 100 countries earlier this year in July. Now, the app is available to those living in the European Union nations, opening the app to about half a billion new users.
How Threads is different in the EU than all around the world
Threads, in the European Union, offers a feature called “Use without a profile,” allowing users to browse the posts without logging in via Instagram.If a user chooses to browse Threads without a profile, they will only see one feed that is algorithmically generated. Although you can search for accounts, there is no option to search for individual posts.
In this mode, users cannot interact with the posts by liking, reposting, or commenting on them. So, if you want to interact with the posts, you will need to sign up using the Instagram profile.
Meanwhile, such an option is not available outside of the European Union. Users outside of the EU are required to log in using their Instagram account to view the posts.
This delay in Threads’ launch in the European Union is said to be because of the Digital Markets Act, which was recently introduced. This law aims to stop Big Tech from abusing its power and to make things fairer. Meta is a “gatekeeper” according to the DMA, and it has until March 2024 to follow the law’s requirements. Although Meta has not officially said that this is the reason for the delay, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said that complying with the new laws that come into effect next year is complicated.
Earlier today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also announced that Threads is being tested to make Threads posts available on Mastodon and other ActivityPub-supporting services. This will enable interoperability, giving people more choice over how they interact and help content reach more people. Joining the fediverse has been on the Threads team’s to-do list since the beginning.
