NAGPUR: Targeting the opposition over the Maratha reservation issue, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday the biggest opposition to the community‘s quota demand came from NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
Fadnavis said the NCP patriarch never wanted to grant reservation to Marathas “despite being in power for so long”. He said history would prove that Pawar had many opportunities to grant reservation, “like during the Mandal Commission era”.”Marathas could have been included in the list of backward communities, but they (Pawar and his government) never wanted this as they were interested in their own survival by pitting two communities against each other. When BJP was in power in the state between 2014-19, we not only granted reservation but also successfully defended it in Bombay HC. It was however dismissed by SC during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government,” he added.
Stating that he was surprised when leaders like Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray spoke about reservation, Fadnavis said he was the one who had opposed the Mandal Commission. “You watch NCP MP Supriya Sule’s statements when MVA was in power. She used to ask whether there are no issues other than reservation. However, we are committed to granting Marathas their rights,” he added.
