NEW DELHI: The Ram Mandir Trust has invited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi for the Ram temple consecration at Ayodhya on January 22.
Sources said Ram Mandir Construction Committee chairman Nripendra Mishra met Kharge on Tuesday and extended the invite. He is also learnt to have personally delivered the invite to Sonia Gandhi.
The invites were accepted during meetings on Tuesday, for which an appointment was sought in advance by Mishra, sources said. They were also informed that an invite was also “being delivered” to former Prime MinisterManmohan Singh, who is unwell.
A decision on attending the ceremony would be taken closer to the event, sources said. “Somebody from Congress” is expected to go for the event, but there has not been any discussion on it yet, they added.
The Trust is inviting political leaders across parties for the mega event. Many state units of Congress, like Punjab, have already announced that they will send pilgrims to Ayodhya in buses.
The Ayodhya issue is set to emerge as a major factor, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with uncertainty among the non-BJP parties about its fallout on the voting.
