Gujarat to teach kids Gita for ‘ancient culture’ connect


GANDHINAGAR: With the aim to “connect students with India’s rich, ancient culture“, the Gujarat government on Friday launched a supplementary textbook on the Bhagavad Gita for classes 6 to 8 on the occasion of Gita Jayanti. The textbook will be added to the curriculum from the next academic year.
The Bhagavad Gita content for classes 9 to 12 was in the process of completion and would be included in the Gujarati language textbook soon, officials said.Sources in the government informed students will not be graded for their knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita, but “will just be assessed without assigning any marks.”
The decision to introduce the Bhagavad Gita in schools was taken under the framework of the Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, minister of state for education, Praful Pansheriya, said.
“Through this academic decision, students will feel proud and connected to the richtraditions of India through the teachings of Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, and (these teachings will) instill moral values among the students,” he added.
