KANPUR: Emulating a suicide prank that he saw on social media turned fatal for an 11-year-old boy in UP’s Hamirpur district when the noose he was playing with tightened and choked him to death.
The victim, Nikhil alias Rajju, tied a towel to the hook in the ceiling of his room, made a noose at the other end and hanged himself. Before he could realise that the prank had gone awry, it was over.
Nikhil’s father Awadhesh Sahu confirmed to the police that his son had watched the prank on social media.Police later found the video in the watchlist of the family’s mobile phone.
Awdhesh, who runs a building material shop, told police after coming back from school on Thursday afternoon Nikhil started watching reels on mobile.
“He tried to emulate a suicide prank after seeing the reels. The noose tightened around his neck. We rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead,” he said.
Nikhil was the eldest among two brothers and a sister. Hamirpur SP Deeksha Sharma said when the mobile was scanned, a video on suicide pranks was found on his YouTube watchlist.
“We appeal to all parents to monitor their children closely so that they do not watch anything destructive,” Sharma said.
The manager of the school where Nikhil studied said he was a promising student.
