India records 7 Covid deaths, including 3 in Kerala; 743 new cases | India News


NEW DELHI: India recorded 743 new Covid-19 cases and seven deaths on Saturday. Kerala reported a maximum of three deaths in a span of 24 hours followed by Karnataka (2), and Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu one each.
The cumulative tally of Covid-19 cases in India since the beginning of the pandemic in January 2020 is now 4,50,12,484. The total death toll has now reached 5,33,358, with the latest additions in the last 24 hours.
The number of daily Covid-19 cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, but cases have again gone up after emergence of JN.1, a new variant, and cold weather conditions.However, few have required hospitalisation as symptoms are mild in most Covid cases. The deaths attributed to Covid mostly involve people with pre-existing co-morbidities, according to government officials.
JN.1 (BA. is a descendant of BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) of SARS-CoV-2 which was first identified in August and reports suggest it carried significant mutations that may contribute to increased transmissibility and immune-escape ability. It is not known whether JN.1 infection produces different symptoms from other variants. In general, symptoms of Covid-19 tend to be similar across variants.
