NEW DELHI: India achieved a historic milestone in women’s Test cricket on Thursday, becoming only the second team to amass over 400 runs in a single day during their one-off Test match against England at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. This remarkable feat underscores the team’s formidable batting prowess and their dominance in the ongoing Test.
This extraordinary achievement by India marks the first occurrence of 400-plus total in a single day in women’s Tests in 88 years.
The last instance dates back to 1935, when England women set the overall record by amassing an impressive 431 for two against New Zealand at Lancaster Park, Christchurch.
At the end of the first day’s play, India reached a formidable score of 410 for seven in 94 overs, with Deepti Sharma unbeaten at 60* and Pooja Vastrakar at 4*.

India showcased a formidable batting display after opting to bat in their first Test at home since 2014, with significant contributions from both the top and middle order.
Debutants Shubha Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68) played pivotal roles, crafting half-centuries and forming a substantial 115-run partnership for the third wicket. Their impressive performances laid a strong foundation for India on the opening day.
Meanwhile, captain Harmanpreet Kaur achieved her highest Test score but narrowly missed out on securing her maiden fifty, falling victim to a bizarre run-out dismissal. Despite the unfortunate end to her innings, Kaur’s notable performance added valuable runs to India’s total.

Yastika Bhatia made a significant impact by achieving her maiden fifty, scoring a brisk 66 off 88 balls, adorned with 10 fours and one six. Furthermore, the lower-order duo of Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana formed a resilient fifty-plus partnership for the seventh wicket, propelling India beyond the 400-run milestone in the innings.

Deepti became the fourth player to score a half-century in the innings, reaching the milestone in 78 balls. She and Rana then guided India beyond the 400-run mark in 89.1 overs, showcasing a commendable partnership. In the process, India surpassed its previous highest total at home, which was 400/6 declared against South Africa in the last home Test in 2014.
